As an ardent fan of Garfield, I’ve always been drawn to his wit, charm, and love for lasagna. The comic strip, created by Jim Davis, has been a staple in my life, providing laughter and comfort.

But it wasn’t until I discovered “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties” that I truly appreciated the depth of these characters and the intricate world they inhabit. This movie, and its corresponding comic series, have been a source of joy and intrigue.

“Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties” is a beautiful combination of comic humor, animated creativity, and intricate storytelling.

The movie, directed by Tim Hill, stays true to the comic’s original essence, while adding unique elements to engage its audience. The result is a blend of humor, adventure, and warmth that appeals to both children and adults.

The story revolves around Garfield, our beloved fat, lazy, witty cat, who finds himself in a mix-up that lands him in a palace in London.

Here, he is mistaken for a royal cat, Prince. The comedy of errors that ensues, coupled with Garfield’s unique personality, creates a delightful and humorous plot.

A Comprehensive Comic and Movie Summary

“Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties” starts with Jon Arbuckle planning to propose to his girlfriend, Dr. Liz Wilson, in England. However, Garfield and his sidekick, Odie, stow away on the trip, leading to a chaotic adventure. Meanwhile, in England, a royal cat named Prince inherits a castle, but his reign is threatened by the nefarious Lord Dargis.

In a classic case of mistaken identity, Garfield is mistaken for Prince and is treated to a life of luxury. Meanwhile, Prince, who is lost in London, meets Garfield’s gang and they join forces to save the castle from Lord Dargis. The comic and movie beautifully depict Garfield’s journey from a lazy housecat to a reluctant hero.

The story is filled with humor, adventure, and heartwarming moments. Garfield, with his wit and charm, navigates through the palace life, while also discovering the joy of friendship and bravery. The movie, like the comic strip, is a delightful journey that leaves you with a smile and a warm heart.

Character Analysis: Who’s Who in Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties

The characters in “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties” are what truly make the story come alive. Each character, from the lovable Garfield to the villainous Lord Dargis, is carefully crafted with unique traits and personalities.

Garfield, voiced by Bill Murray, is our protagonist. He is a fat, lazy, and sarcastic cat who loves lasagna and dislikes Mondays. Despite his lazy demeanor, Garfield is intelligent and has a heart of gold. His wit and charm are the highlights of the movie and comic.

Jon Arbuckle, voiced by Breckin Meyer, is Garfield’s owner and a good-natured man. He loves Garfield and Odie unconditionally, and his attempts to propose to Liz provide many humorous moments. Liz Wilson, voiced by Jennifer Love Hewitt, is Jon’s girlfriend and a veterinarian. She is kind-hearted and loves animals.

Prince, voiced by Tim Curry, is the royal cat who gets confused with Garfield. He is kind, sophisticated, and loves his kingdom. Lord Dargis, voiced by Billy Connolly, is the primary villain who plans to turn the castle into a resort. His plans create the main conflict in the story.

Odie, the dog, and other minor characters also add value to the story, making it a delightful ensemble.

When and Where Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties Takes Place

“Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties” is set in the present-day, but the exact year is not specified. The movie begins in America, specifically in Jon Arbuckle’s home where Garfield lives. However, the majority of the story takes place in England.

The shift from the comfort of Jon’s home to the grandeur of a castle in England creates a fantastic contrast. Garfield, who is used to a laid-back life, suddenly finds himself amidst royalty and luxury.

The castle, with its magnificent architecture and beautiful gardens, becomes a central character in the plot, providing a backdrop for the hilarious antics of Garfield.

The streets of London also play an essential role, especially when Prince is lost and trying to find his way back. The city’s iconic landmarks are beautifully depicted, adding to the visual appeal of the movie.

Highlights of the Soundtrack by Christophe Beck

The music in “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties” plays a crucial role in setting the mood and enhancing the storytelling. The soundtrack, composed by Christophe Beck, is a delightful blend of various musical styles that perfectly complement the narrative.

The score beautifully captures the humor, adventure, and heartfelt moments in the film. The use of light, playful tunes for Garfield’s antics, intense music for the suspenseful scenes, and warm melodies for the emotional moments, adds depth to the storytelling.

One of the highlights is the song “Dance Tonight” by Paul McCartney, played during the end credits. Its upbeat rhythm and catchy lyrics leave the audience with a smile, perfectly concluding the movie.

Unveiling Curiosities and Interesting Facts about Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties

“Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties” is filled with interesting facts and curiosities that add to its charm. For instance, did you know that the movie is loosely based on Mark Twain’s novel “The Prince and The Pauper”? The idea of two identical individuals swapping places is a central theme in both stories.

Another interesting fact is that Bill Murray, the voice of Garfield, improvised many of his lines, adding his unique touch to the character. Furthermore, Tim Curry, who voiced Prince, also voiced another famous cat, the Cheshire Cat in an animated adaptation of “Alice in Wonderland”.

The movie also features a cameo by the comic strip’s creator, Jim Davis. He appears as a tourist in one of the scenes, which is a delightful treat for the fans.

As a parent, I found “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties” to be a wholesome and entertaining movie for my kids.

It is rated PG and is suitable for children of all ages. The humor is clean, the violence is minimal and mostly slapstick, and there are many positive messages about friendship, bravery, and being true to oneself.

However, it’s always recommended to watch it with your kids, as some scenes might require your explanation. For instance, Lord Dargis’s evil plans might scare younger children, and the concept of mistaken identity might be confusing for some.
